Jacob Holmes' passion for outdoor recreation and earth sciences began in early childhood while living in the Maine woods. His family lived off the land, often without power or running water, and sometimes without a house during the summer months—living in cool pine-shaded camps near streams or lakes in the backcountry. Left to explore the woods and rocks on his own, he developed a deep connection with nature and a profound appreciation for gear that stands up to the elements.
His grandmother's job at the public library allowed him to follow his curiosity, reading every book he could find on natural history, geology, paleontology, and zoology. Later on, Jacob worked on local farms and construction sites with his family before joining the Army, choosing the Army College Fund. After serving for nine years, becoming a father, and building a civilian career in satellite network operations and radio frequency engineering, Jacob is using the Montgomery GI Bill to pursue a Master’s degree in geophysics and electrical engineering. He works as a Glaciologist and member of the Polar Geophysics Research Team at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute. Jacob is also a Rock Climbing Instructor and Alpine Mountain Guide with Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School. When your office is a glacier, you get good at figuring out how to stay warm and comfortable in extreme environments.
