Our Verdict

The Hari Mari Scouts are a smart flop that's all about comfort and style. Attention to detail and quality materials make these kicks look good and feel cool — an excellent flip for walking around town. However, the Scouts lack the durability and versatility to be our favorite all-around live-in flop. Still, they are more comfortable than many other style-oriented models, and if you find yourself at the beach or out on the boat more often than in the mountains, they are a solid choice.

Our Analysis and Test Results

While these flip flops aren't as action-oriented as others, they still kick the pants off of many lighter stylish models when it comes to comfort and durability. They are supportive and mold to the feet as they break-in.

Comfort

Out of the box, the smooth nubuck leather insoles of the Scouts are flat, and the footbed feels firm — almost too firm for our liking. But the break-in period is a slow-burning one, where the footbeds become softer with each lakeside stroll or afternoon hike. Eventually, you will find them perfectly molded to your feet, except for under the arch, where the sole is thicker and more supportive. The break-in period is made easier by a memory foam toe post, one of our favorite features of any flip flop, and the jersey-lined straps. The toe post gives you a soft place to squeeze when you're hiking up steep dunes or scrambling up rocks in search of the perfect napping spot.

Support and Stability

To sum up the overall support and stability of the Scouts would be to say good not great. Yes, these flip flops look dang good and are certainly adequate for jaunts around town. The low arch and clean lines definitely keep them from having that “orthopedic” look, but the overall support is simple middle-of-the-road. These are simply geared towards squish rather than stability, and the edges have a bit of roll if you get too tipsy at the Yacht Club, so keep that in mind.

Traction

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lotta traction going on beneath the Scouts. They don't have the thick, dirt-grabbing lugs of other models and are best suited to flat surfaces like boat decks or bare rock slabs.

Versatility

These flops are heavy on style but light duty when it comes to adventuring. They just don't have the traction or durability needed to push into the backcountry as part of your adventure kit. But they sure do look great for a date night!

Durability

The boat-safe non-marking outsole on the bottom of the Scouts is thin compared to the massive beefy lugs of some other models in our review. That said, the overall footbed is decently thick, and the straps are wide and well-designed. After logging many miles on dirt and pavement, we still had a nice-looking flip.

Style

Hoo boy! These flops look good on everybody. They're so simple with clean lines and great color combinations. The thick, lightly padded straps look great and wear well. These aren't your dad's chunky over padded flip flops, that's for sure.

Value

The price tag is a bit steep on this flip, especially considering they aren't hyper durable and don't have a lifetime warranty. However, 1% of all Hari Mari sales goes to helping kids with cancer pay for treatment and medical costs. If you like the Hari Mari style, you won't be wasting your money with these comfortable, well constructed flip flops.

Conclusion

For those disappointed with other brands but still in search of a quality leather thong, the Hari Mari Scouts should do the trick. We didn't like them for backpacking trips or hiking to crags, but when the itinerary calls for sailing, hanging out at the beach, or looking cool on warm nights out on the town, these flops deliver in spades.
