The Best Climbing Helmets
We bought and tested 13 of the most popular climbing helmets side-by-side to find the best options. With the possibility of being struck in the head from rockfall or slamming your head into the wall after an out-of-control fall, wearing a helmet while climbing is simply a good idea. Our team of experts takes these helmets cragging on single-pitch routes, up long adventurous trad climbs, and on multi-day alpine objectives. We carefully evaluate each helmet across six performance metrics: comfort, adjustability, weight, ventilation, features, and durability. No matter your preferred climbing style, there are solid helmets available at every price point.
Our climbing helmet of choice is the Black Diamond Vision Mips. This helmet is durable (meaning it's less prone to denting in your pack), feels lightweight on your head, and is one of the most comfortable helmets we've tested. It also has great adjustability. However, it's not cheap. If you're looking for something more budget-friendly, we recommend the Black Diamond Half Dome or Petzl Meteor. We find the Meteor the more comfortable of the two.
From climbing ropes to the latest climbing harnesses, all of our gear has been tested by a team of experienced, dedicated climbers, both amateur and professional. We use our in-depth testing to outline all our favorite climbing gear to make your purchase decisions easier.
Editor's Note: We updated our climbing helmet review on December 20, 2024, to share an overview of some of our favorites and include specs tables for our award picks.
