Beyond Yoga Spacedye High-Waist Review
Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Beyond Yoga Spacedye High-Waist is made with 87% Polyester and 13% Lycra. All colors are available in XS-XL, and some come in XXS and XXL. The fit runs true to size.
Performance Comparison
Breathability
Beyond Yoga states that these pants have “quick-dry properties,” but that was not the case for us. In fact, we left class one day wearing the pants (and feeling sweaty in them), went to the grocery store, then the pet store, and by the time we got home an hour later, we still felt some dampness in the pant. If you tend to sweat a lot in class, then you'll want to look for more breathable models like the Alo Yoga High-Waisted Airbrush, Lululemon Align II, orLululemon Train.
The other issue with the Spacedye's fabric is that, depending on your color choice, your sweat might be highly visible. We tested a lighter heather color, and it showed every drop, darkening considerably. After many bad experiences of leaving a class looking like we wet ourselves because the lighter gray/pink color got darker when wet, we hesitate to wear these for anything but the gentlest of classes.
Ease of Movement
This pant is easy to move in until it gets wet from sweat. Then the material feels sticky, and it clings to our legs, impeding our movement a little bit. We did like the stretch when dry though, and the waistband is nice and wide but not too bulky, so it doesn't get in the way of any forward bends.
Comfort and Fit
Beyond Yoga also states that their “soft Spacedye performance material provides a level of comfort unparalleled by any activewear you currently own.” In this aspect, they are correct! These were one of the most comfortable pairs of yoga pants in this review. The material is so soft and cozy, and it was our favorite pair for wearing all day. If comfort is your main criteria when buying a pair of yoga pants, then the Beyond Yoga Spacedye High-Waist or Beyond Yoga Midi are the pants for you.
We read a lot of online user reviews for this pant, and many of them said you'd need to size down to get a good fit. We ordered in our usual size though, and they fit just fine. They also offered a decent amount of compression for such a comfortable pant, and we never felt “jiggly” while walking or practicing in them. We also appreciate that some colors come in an XXS and XXL size option. Too many manufacturers stop at XL (or even Large), leaving larger yogis out of luck. On the flip side, with sizes increasing, teeny tiny yogis can also struggle to find pants that fit and often find themselves shopping in the teen aisle; the more options, the better, so that we can all find great clothes for practicing in.
Durability
We had no major issues with durability during our testing period, but do wonder how long they can keep staying so soft without any pilling or hardening of the fabric. We did see some pilling in the Alo Goddess Ribbed Legging and The North Face Perfect Core High-Rise after only a half-dozen or so uses, so at least the Spacedye passed this first bar unscathed.
Style
When it comes to style, these leggings are fairly plain. The heather-colored fabrics come in great color choices, but there is little else going on style-wise. They're not going to turn heads like the Alo Goddess Ribbed Legging, with its two-toned construction, or the wild print options of the Onzie Capris. That being said, sometimes all you want is a plain pair of comfy leggings to coordinate with an outfit, and we'd much rather wear these under a sweater dress than an uncomfortable pair of tights.
Best Applications
These leggings are best for gentle yoga where you might not sweat a lot, or for someone looking for a cozy pair to wear all day long. The heather colors can coordinate well with a variety of clothing, so if you are looking for a pair of leggings to wear under a chunky sweater or dress.
Value
These leggings retail for $88, which is a lot of money to plunk down for one pair of leggings; however, if you're looking for a versatile pair that you can also wear around town, then these will do the trick. In fact, we feel better about spending this much on something that we'd actually wear regularly around town as opposed to something that we only sweat in and trash quickly.
Conclusion
Let's face it - sometimes we wear our yoga pants more for other activities then we do for actual yoga. In fact, we've even seen a sign in front of a yoga studio that said: “You've bought the clothes now try the practice!” If you're looking for the best pair of leggings to wear around the house all day or to work or school in colder months, the Beyond Yoga Spacedye High-Waist is a clear winner. They are cozy and soft, and one of the best pairs in this review for all-day wear (along with the other Beyond Yoga model). These weren't the best pair of yoga pants, purely due to their lack of breathability, but provide an exceptional level of all-day comfort.
