Our Analysis and Test Results
If you're looking for an inexpensive pedometer that tracks steps, distance, active calories burned, and little else - then this is the product for you. The 3D TriSport took the 2018 Best Buy Award for being an excellent, comprehensive, stand-alone pedometer at a reasonable price. Our reviewers found this device to be perfectly adequate for tracking distance and steps without needing to continually reference a smartphone. The 3D TriSport is ideal if you're looking for a simple device to monitor activity and up your fitness motivation game on a budget.
The only real issues with the 3D TriSport are that the device was a bit bulky to be covertly attached to a belt or stowed in a pant pocket. Any data other than steps also reset after 24 hours, not ideal. The device tracks total steps for the previous 30 days. These issues might not be deal-breakers for you. If you're interested in tracking data over time, you could transcribe your data on the daily. Further, one could wear the device on a lanyard or stash the device in a jacket or backpack pocket.
Performance Comparison
The 3D TriSport performed well in every category aside from Depth of Data. This is a standard trade-off for stand-alone pedometers that don't sync with smartphones or computer apps. What you gain in this trade-off is an affordably priced yet reasonably comprehensive pedometer that tracks steps, distance, and active calories burned.
Data Management
When we talk about data management, we're talking about how data is collected and displayed. Some app-enabled devices allow users to add personal information to supplement the activity data the device captures. Others simply collect activity data. There are also two methods for pedometers to display the information they collect. App-enabled devices can take advantage of a smartphone or computer display. Others have an integrated screen to monitor activity data.
The 3D TriSport takes the second approach in both cases. It is a stand-alone device that only collects data gathered by its internal accelerometer and displays all the data on its own screen. As such, data management for the TriSport is quite simple, which is why the TriSport scores well in our data management metric.
While you are unable to manage loads of health data on a stand-alone device, the TriSport does provide an array of pertinent activity data, including the number of steps recorded from the day before (as seen in the photo above). It also logs the total number of steps taken in the previous 30 days (as seen in the photo below).
Depth of Data
To assess the depth of data, we look at how much data each device captures, tracks, and stores. More doesn't necessarily mean better. Not all pedometer users want a device that records data from every facet of their lives. For some folks, a simple, stand-alone device like the 3D TriSport is ideal. If that sounds like you, don't let its average depth of data score deter your interest.
The TriSport tracks steps taken, distance traveled, active calories burned, and duration of all activity each day. Then, every 24 hours one can view the previous day's steps. The TriSport also keeps a record of the total steps taken over the past 30 days.
Want to look at data trends over time, but don't want a data-dense device that demands a smartphone? Grab a pen and paper or pull up a spreadsheet on your computer. The only way to monitor activity levels overtime is to transcribe your data old-school style. While the TriSport may not be the appropriate device for someone who wants to dive deep into the realm of fitness tracking — this Best Buy winning device is elegant in its simplicity. The TriSport tracks the day's activity levels and little more, leaving motivation up to you.
Accuracy
To test accuracy, we walk around a track counting steps and monitoring distance with each pedometer. We then compare our step counts & the distance walked on the track with each device's readouts to determine the percentage of accuracy.
The 3D TriSport proved to be one of the most accurate devices our reviewers tested, surpassed only by the CSX Simple Walking 3D and the OZO Fitness SC2. If step count accuracy is crucial for your activity monitoring, then this is the device for you.
It also has a 10-step error corrector, which means that it only counts steps if you take 10 or more in a row.
Ease of Use
After busting open the blister package, the 3D TriSport took a mere 15 minutes to setup and begin using. A word to the wise, it is crucial to know the time, your weight, height, and stride-length before starting the set-up process. The TriSport goes to sleep when idle for 15 to 30 seconds, which can get frustrating if you don't have all the pertinent details on hand. As such, we recommend locating your tape measure & measuring stride-length before beginning the set-up process.
To measure stride-length, we walked ten steps, marking our first & last steps. Then we measured the distance with a tape measure and divided by ten. This is the method recommended by the TriSport.
Given 3D's recommended approach for measuring stride-length the TriSport proved super accurate and took very little time to get up and running. The instructions are easy to follow, and the settings are all fairly intuitive, earning the TriSport a high score for Ease of Use.
Portability
The 3D Trisport is one of the bulkier devices we reviewed. However, this pedometer comes equipped with a lanyard to wear it around the neck. It can also be clipped to a person's shoe, inside their pocket, or on a belt.
The clip proved secure and durable during the month of testing. Additionally, the device proved reliable for step counting, even when stashed in a backpack. As such, the TriSport garnered a fairly high portability rating in spite of its relatively clunky design.
Best Applications
The 3D TriSport is an ideal stand-alone pedometer with a long battery life. For those wanting a simple activity tracker at an affordable price, the TriSport gets the job done. While this device doesn't track every intimate health detail or provide lifestyle advice, it does monitor steps, distance, calories, and active time in a reliable fashion. Additionally, given the long battery life, the TriSport could be useful for people heading into the backcountry who want to track distance/steps traveled without breaking the bank on a GPS watch. If you're looking for a simple easy-to-use device to help motivate you to meet or track your daily activity, then the TriSport might be the perfect choice for you.
Value
The TriSport is an exceptional value, winning our 2018 Best Buy Award. This pedometer impressed our reviewers for being easy to set-up and use, and for tracking comprehensive daily data on a budget.
Conclusion
The 3D TriSport is an excellent pedometer for simple activity tracking. It is extremely accurate and features an easy-to-read screen, with intuitive functions, and tracks only the necessary movement data from your day. If you're looking for an autonomous device that you don't have to sync with a smartphone app to analyze your daily fitness goals — the TriSport is a reliable, simple device that handles these tasks like a boss.
