Our Verdict

If you're looking for a modern hiking boot that performs well during moderate backpacking trips and also looks great on the streets, the Teva Grandview GTX Mid doesn't disappoint. Features like a cushioned footbed and a wider toe box allow for comfort from day one. Additionally, an adjustable heel lock system provides security during those downhill pushes, and a Vibram sole inspires confidence when navigating all kinds of terrain, from decomposing granite to slick and polished boulders. A favorite of our testing team for function and style, the Grandview is a great choice for those looking for a balance of aesthetics and performance.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Grandview GTX Mid is considered a modern version of a traditional hiking boot. Constructed from leather, mesh, and synthetic textiles, these boots offer waterproof capabilities while also allowing the boot to release excess moisture in hot conditions. The wide toe box, cushioned footbed, and adjustable ankle support provide comfort on day one with no break-in period. Did we mention we received the most compliments when wearing these lightweight and stylish hikers? The Grandview is an ideal choice for various activities from around town to moderate hikes in the backcountry.

Comfort

The Grandview is comfortable right out of the box. These boots quickly became our lead tester's go-to for day-to-day missions and activities throughout the fall season. While she has a narrow foot, the Grandview can also appeal to those with wider feet, thanks to the generous toe-box that allows for more wiggle room and alleviates any possibilities for hot spots. The padding around the ankle also increases comfort without adding any bulk or weight to the overall design.

The inner lining of this boot is constructed from a micro waffle knit textile, which feels nice next to the foot. The responsive footbed and low adjustable ankle shaft also offer a ton of customizable support and comfort — we found ourselves selecting these boots for everything from biking to work to moderate backpacking trips.

Support

Our testing team was initially skeptical regarding the support of the Teva Grandview. Teva? Hiking? Really? Most people associate Teva with top-rated water shoes or sandals, but this boot quickly became our daily driver for activities ranging from hikes in the forest, working for extended periods on our feet, and even biking around town.

While these boots aren't necessarily designed for long extended treks, they do offer substantial support thanks to their responsive footbed, nylon ESS shanks, and an adjustable heel feature that allows for customized support. The 4" ankle shaft height offers support while allowing the foot to remain nimble over uneven terrain. The Grandview will give you a noticeably supported spring in your step.

Though the Teva Grandview doesn't offer the same support as a boot with a higher ankle shaft, it does provide sufficient support on uneven surfaces.

Traction

Our testers were impressed by the overall traction offered by the Grandview. We walked on decomposing granite, hopped the slickest boulders we could find, and traveled over wet surfaces. This boot provides exceptional traction thanks to the Vibram Megagrip outsoles that inspire sure-footed performance over various terrain types.

While not as aggressive as other models tested in this review, the lugs and tread pattern on the underside of the Grandview provided enough grip and sticky traction to make us feel confident when negotiating uneven and technical terrain. The lugs are significant enough to catch on carpet and the cages on bike pedals, especially when brand new.

Water Resistance

In order to examine the overall waterproofing of the Grandview, we took every opportunity to dunk these boots in various creeks and streams. We even wore them as our go-to commuter boots while biking during a downpour, and our feet stayed completely dry thanks to the waterproof leather, breathable Gore-Tex booties, and a DWR finish that promises to keep your feet dry even during wet weather conditions.

When submerging these boots for one minute in a stream, we noticed that the mesh upper, while perfectly waterproof, retained a bit of water once we continued our hike. This made us think that the DWR finish may begin to fail over time and require more applications over the boot's life. And while we love the waterproof capabilities of a Gore-Tex boot in terms of comfort during wet conditions, it can also be a bit much in hot conditions. However, the Grandview breathed better than most Gore-Tex models we tested, thanks to the mesh fabric over the toes that releases any excess moisture.

Though the mesh in the upper design retains some water after submersion, it never penterated the inner bootie.

Weight

Compared to other leather boots with a more traditional design, the Grandview is a relatively lightweight option. Weighing in at 1.86 pounds for a pair of women's size 8.5 US, it is not the lightest hiking boot we tested but falls in the middle of the pack.

The minimalist design and EVA midsoles offer support without adding unnecessary weight. The tongue of the Grandview is thin, which prevents the boot from being bulky, but still allows for the boot to release excess moisture built up during activity. Again, while not the lightest boot we tested, the Grandview offers solid support without feeling heavy underfoot.

Durability

Throughout our extensive testing period, we experienced no issues regarding durability and overall quality with the Teva Grandview. These boots offer a quality leather construction with a touch of breathable mesh near the toes to release moisture. Though the synthetic rand, which wraps around the toe box, is not constructed of sticky rubber, like other models in this review, it still provides solid protection from any debris encountered on the trails without showing significant signs of wear.

The lacing system on the Grandview isn't the most durable we've seen, but it is constructed of substantial synthetic materials and thicker laces. These design choices lend performance without the weight of metal or heavier materials.

Should You Buy the Teva Grandview GTX Mid?

This contemporary hiking boot performs well during mellow day hikes and moderate backpacking trips without sacrificing style. While not our top choice for rugged and technical terrain, the Teva Grandview offers waterproof protection, cushioned support, and a lower ankle shaft for nimble footwork over various terrain. This became a favorite of our testing team for day-to-day missions thanks to its functional style and overall comfort.

What Other Hiking Boots Should You Consider?

If you like the idea of a hiking boot that's functional for the trails and stylish enough to wear around town, check out the Danner Mountain 600. For those longer days in the backcountry when you're shouldering heavier loads, we prefer the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Mid GTX. And for those in the market for a more traditional leather hiking boot, the La Sportiva Nucleo High II GTX offers excellent waterproof protection and cushioned ankle support.
