Our Analysis and Test Results
The Vivere Double Cotton is perfect for those looking for a freestanding hammock that allows the convenience of setting up just about anywhere without relying upon two perfectly spaced trees and suspension straps. While the heavy-weight design requires a little torque to set up, our testers appreciated the stability and security of the tightly fitted frame, especially when accommodating two people. And though it isn't as versatile as other options we've tested, Vivere does offer accessories that can be purchased separately to enhance its versatility. If comfort, stability, and durability are at the top of your list of considerations, this hammock is a solid choice.
Performance Comparison
Comfort
The Vivere Double Cotton features a spacious design constructed from reinforced 100% breathable cotton, one of the most comfortable options we tested. Whether lounging alone or with your sweetheart, there are a variety of adjustments on each side of the metal stand that allow you to customize your hammock to your preferred position. After lounging on multiple occasions, the only discomfort we noted was in the back of the knees if the hammock is not properly adjusted to prevent hyperextending the legs.
Measuring 9' x 4' with a weight limit that holds up to 450 pounds, our testers (with a combined weight of 300 pounds) found the setting combination of the first and fourth holes to accommodate their size in addition to the combined weight easily. This position allowed them to rest well above the ground below with enough breeze through the fabric to keep them cool. Lounging solo? Try throwing your legs over each side; we found this to feel nice and supportive of our knees. On colder days, we found it easy to layer a sleeping pad between our body and the hammock, which broke the wind while adding warmth for increased comfort. Overall, we found the cotton canopy to provide a ton of comfort and even a bit of a cocoon effect due to the spacious fabric we wrapped around our bodies when reclining alone.
Ease of Setup
The Vivere Double Cotton setup includes the hammock itself, the steel frame with assembly hardware, and a carrying case. While our testing team could not initially set up this design without looking at the instructions, we found that we became more and more efficient with each setup and breakdown. The first attempt required over 15 minutes; however, it was our first time setting up a freestanding hammock in this configuration, and we subsequently whittled down our time. That being said, this frame requires a bit of muscle and torque to properly align the holes that coincide on each piece of the frame before the poles can be properly attached and held in place. While initially somewhat frustrating, we ultimately appreciated the stability that it provided once we got the hang of it.
Our testers love that no tools were required for setup, simply placing metal hooks secured by wingnuts and washers that rest flat on each side of the frame. These made it simple to attach each polyester suspension cord while the provided screws secured the base of the frame. Just don't make the same mistake we did and place the hooks on the inside of the frame, as this will leave your cotton hammock directly on the ground. Breaking down is easier than setting it up; however, we recommend applying the same torque to separate the frame. After a bit of practice with the configuration, this freestanding design offers excellent adjustability and rather easy setup.
Durability and Protection
While some might scoff at the price tag and heavy weight, the Vivere Double Cotton will make up for it in terms of stability and durability so that you can nap in peace. The zinc-coated heavy-duty steel requires some torque for assembly, which we believe strengthens the frame and prevents it from shifting under a heavy load. Vivere also includes plastic caps to cover the end of each frame to protect the legs from abrasion when encountering concrete or your backyard deck.
The polyester end strings (that should last much longer than cotton strings) that provide the attachment point are reinforced with an inner metal ring to prevent the strings from interacting with the metal frame. The polyester also resists weather, mildew, and rot, though Vivere does recommend storing your hammock indoors during inclement weather to protect and extend the life of your investment. The tightly woven cotton is high quality and offers a heavy and durable finish that we never encountered any issues with during our testing period. Though a heavy-weight design, the metal frame combined with the polyester attachment points and double cotton material offers a ton of durability.
Versatility
While the Vivere Double Cotton doesn't offer as much versatility as other options tested for this review, compatible accessories for this hammock are available separately for an additional cost. Though we did not test the tree straps offered on the Vivere site, we were able to attach straps from other brands to hang the hammock from two trees. Just note that you will have to girth-hitch the cord through the reinforced attachment point as it's too big to utilize with a standard carabiner.
While the compact size of the hammock is similar to that of a traditional four-person tent, measuring 46" x 8" x 7", Vivere does advertise the option of a wheel kit to aid in mobility, thereby increasing its versatility. Ultimately, the intended use of this hammock is for those who don't necessarily want a lightweight hammock that is easily portable but rather a durable and freestanding frame.
Weight
Weighing 27 pounds total or 7 pounds for the hammock alone, the Vivere Double Cotton is one of the heaviest options that we tested. In fact, only one hammock weighs more than this one. However, this is not the hammock for those who are looking for a lightweight and versatile design. This hammock is for those looking for a stable and durable heavy-duty steel base that can accommodate up to 450 pounds.
Though a heavy-weight design, this hammock still offers a nice carrying case that allows those who can lift 27 pounds with a Velcro-secured clasp on the two straps. This case makes it easy to move the hammock from the front to the backyard or pack it into your vehicle. This freestanding design is sturdy and durable, never creaking or shifting during use, while inspiring confidence for those who are resting in the canopy.
Should You Buy the Vivere Double Cotton with Stand?
The Vivere Double Cotton is perfect for those searching for the freedom to assemble your hammock wherever you please. The strong metal frame provides a secure, stable, and durable base that allows you to lounge anywhere without searching for mature trees for suspension. The 100% cotton fabric combines with a spacious design to offer comfort for one or two people. Perhaps our biggest complaint is the torque required for setup. However, we found this to offer peace of mind as we reclined with our sweetheart without any shifting within the sturdy frame. The Vivere Double Cotton is a great option for those not prioritizing mobility and versatility but seeking a durable and comfortable freestanding option for two.
What Other Hammocks Should You Consider?
If you like the idea of a freestanding hammock but aren't ready to pay for an option like the Vivere Double Cotton, check out the more affordable PNAEUT Double Hammock with Stand. This is almost the exact same design as the Vivere, however, we felt it lacked some stability and durability within the frame and attachment points. And if you live near the forest and don't mind searching for trees that are large enough to hang your hammock from, check out the ENO DoubleNest that offers an easy setup, intuitive and durable design, that's big enough to fit two people comfortably.
